Lodoe Laura

In the early afternoon of February 27, 2009 in the Ngaba county of the Sichuan province, Tapey, a Tibetan monk in his mid twenties, set himself on fire in an act of protest. Since Tapey’s act, more than 150 Tibetans have self-immolated. Working with Tibetan advocacy groups, Lodoe Laura collected images of them. These photographs, handprinted in incense collected from the diaspora community, function as an act of resistance, and a critique of the Chinese government’s account of life inside Tibet.

Lodoe Laura is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. Through photography, installation, performance, and video, she examines themes of cultural crossover, collective memory, and the intersection of cultural and political practice. Lodoe Laura was a recipient of a Magnum Photo scholarship in 2015, and is completing her BFA in Photography at Ryerson University's School of Image Arts. She is a recipient of the AIMIA | AGO Scholarship Prize, and most recently was a winner of The Magenta Foundation's 2016 Flash Forward Award.
